Wild Turkey Hen

These majestic birds have made a very strong comeback in southern Maine over the last few years. I photographed this hen, another hen and what must have been 10 or 12 chicks very near to the Laudholm Farm.

If you are walking you probably won't get any closer than 40 or 50 feet from these birds. The mother hen will keep walking at your pace to keep that distance between you and her chicks. The chicks are able to fly off into the trees if mother tells them that danger has gotten too close, but she will continue to stroll along on the ground making herself the target of a potential predator. Don't worry too much about her though. A wild turkey is a powerful bird and will charge a person in a very intimidating way. Approach turkeys at your own risk.
